The Problems
Outlined below are the most critical problems affecting safety on Overland Avenue, as discussed by its residents. See the list of proposed Solutions to these problems. (As identified in October 2003.)
1. Traffic Accidents occur on a regular basis at the corner of Overland Ave. and Tennessee Ave. caused by drivers crossing Overland Ave. from Tennessee Ave. in either direction, despite the City putting "right turn only" signs and posts. The drivers crossing Tennessee Ave. simply ignore the signs.

2. Traffic Accidents also occur on a regular basis on Overland Ave. as residents try to get in and out of their driveways while north and south bound traffic fails to yield to residents, thus crashing into the homeowners' vehicle.

3. Unsafe Pedestrian Passage at Overland Ave. and Tennessee Ave. as there is no painted crosswalk nor Stop signs to cause traffic to yield to pedestrians. This is especially dangerous as the corners at Overland Ave. and Tennessee Ave. are not directly perpendicular, but are in angle, thereby causing some confusion.

4. Speeding occurs on a regular basis as people insist on violating the posted 25 mph limit and drive anywhere from 40 - 60 mph as they head north to Olympic Bl. and south to Pico Bl. during off-peak traffic hours.

5. Overweight Trucks regularly use Overland Ave. as a cut through in violation of the posted "no vehicles over 6000 pounds/3 tons" signs. The result is torn up streets full of pot holes, destruction of the trees lining the street as the truck shave off the branches as they go past and noise pollution.

6. Trash, Debris and Pollution from idling vehicles stuck in traffic, which ends up in the front yards of the homes along Overland Ave. and is a persistent annoyance and health hazard to local residents.

7. Unsafe Pedestrian Passage at corners near and around Westwood Charter Elementary School. There are many families with young children living on and around Overland Avenue who attend Westwood Charter Elementary School. It is extremely dangerous for them to cross not only at Overland Ave. and Tennessee Ave., but also at the other corners of Overland Ave. between Pico Blvd. and Santa Monica Blvd. due to speeding vehicles as well as vehicles that do not yield to pedestrians at currently posted Stop signs.

8. Overland Ave. is much wider south of Pico Bl. and it would be easier for the traffic merge to occur there, instead of the current merge north of Pico Bl. As a result, there are many accidents caused by the improper racing and merging between two moving cars. There have also been several instances where these racing and merging cars have hit parked cars. Moreover, by continuing the two lanes of traffic further north into the narrow part of Overland Ave., the south bound portion (by the Washington Mutual parking lot and the city parking lot) was narrowed. This narrowing of the south bound portion causes cars to get backed up on the street thereby increasing pollution and promoting vehicles to bottleneck at Overland Ave., north of Pico Blvd.
